ACTION REQUESTED: Please call Senator Karin Housley, 651-296-4351 about election security!
Senate File 93 (SF93) should be a no-brainer for both parties. It releases about $7 million dollars in federal funds for election security. Most states got access to this funding last year, but not Minnesota.
The House version of this bill (HF14) is moving quickly but the Senate version hasn’t even been scheduled for its first hearing. Steve Simon recently said he’s concerned the bill is being slow-walked through the Senate. We can help!
The bill is currently sitting in the Senate State Government Finance and Policy and Elections committee. Please call the chair, Mary Kiffmeyer, 651-296-5655, and the minority lead, Jim Carlson, 651-297-8073. Also, please call Senator Karin Housley’s Senate office, 651-296-4351. Tell her staff that election security is important!
This is a suggested message:
Minnesota needs immediate access to the Help America Vote Act funds to secure our elections. Please immediately hold hearings and pass SF93, to unlock nearly $7 million in funds to the Secretary of State.
Here is some additional information:
The bill requires matching funds from the state (about $200k) but those funds do not have to be paid for 5 years. Adding this funding now will require more committee stops which will slow down the passage of this bill. The House GOP has been trying to amend the bill (which will slow it down) to add the matching funds then accusing the DFL of voting against election security when they voted down that amendment. If you get push back about this from your Senator saying these matching funds are needed in this bill, they are lying.
